Ace of Hand-Crafted Plastic

Malaka is constantly watching the Food Network, and for the most part, I’m supportive of that cable content decision. I’ll admit a secret weak spot for Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, mostly because I love seeing just how many times you can fry a chicken, and also because I didn’t know they didn’t give the lead singer of Smash Mouth a television show.

However, one show I cannot support is that obnoxious hipster-filled, snarky and, really, faux-food show Ace of Cakes. Sure, the handiwork and construction of the custom cakes are impressive, but let’s not give credit where credit certainly isn’t due. Let’s be clear here; they’re making something, but they certainly aren’t cakes.

Nearly every square inch of the outside of their cakes are made with fondant, which is a cross between sugar and hard plastic. On the inside, it might taste swell, but that’s nothing but regular cake and frosting. Which is what we call a sheet cake, which is also what they deliver to you when you custom order what ends up being a centerpiece; visually appealing, but not so much to the taste buds.

Look at this bad boy. Yeah, it looks cool. But would you sink your teeth into that dump truck, or even the outside of the white wedding cake? Would you taste it?

Maybe it’s just the fondant I’ve tasted. I’d be willing to try other brands, or Charm City Cakes’ brand. But color me skeptical. I’m impressed by their artwork, but I just can’t get too excited by the entire operation that Duff Goodman runs over there in Baltimore until I have some indication that the fondant they use doesn’t also taste like shit.

  • Ace of Cakes is a great show filmed in the best city ever. I would totally eat one in a heartbeat but they’re like 500 dollarz and I think the waitlist is miles long.

  • i know nothing of the food channel, but i certainly know something doesn’t look edible when i see it. are you sure that truck is part of that cake?
